How to hire an SEO freelancer in Mumbai (rates, red flags, questions)
What to pay, what to ask, and the five red flags that predict a wasted retainer — a complete hiring guide from a Mumbai SEO freelancer, including exactly how to vet me.
Hiring an SEO freelancer in Mumbai costs ₹15,000–₹80,000 per month depending on seniority, or ₹2,000–₹6,000/hour for consulting. The hard part isn’t the price — it’s that a bad freelancer and a good one quote similar numbers, promise similar things, and only separate six months and a few lakh later. This guide is the separation test, up front.
Full disclosure: I’m a Mumbai SEO freelancer, so this page is partly a pitch. I’ve handled that the only honest way I know — everything below applies to vetting me too, and I’ve linked where you can run each check against my own profile.
What SEO freelancers charge in Mumbai (2026)
| Level | Monthly retainer | Hourly | What you’re buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior (0–3 yrs) | ₹8,000–₹25,000 | ₹500–₹1,500 | Task execution — on-page basics, plugin audits, posts |
| Mid (3–7 yrs) | ₹25,000–₹50,000 | ₹1,500–₹3,000 | Strategy + execution, technical fixes, content direction |
| Senior specialist (7+ yrs) | ₹50,000–₹1,50,000 | ₹2,000–₹6,000 | Outcomes — roadmaps, migrations, recovery, local-pack wins |
Mumbai runs 20–30% above national rates. If a quote is dramatically below these bands, you’re not getting a discount — you’re getting a different (automated) product. Full market breakdown: what SEO actually costs in Mumbai.
The five-check vetting process
1. Verify they rank for anything themselves
An SEO freelancer whose own site is invisible is telling you something. Search their name plus “SEO Mumbai”, check whether their site appears for any commercial term, and look at their Google Business Profile — rating, review count, review recency.
Run it on me: search “Shezad Ali Khan” or check my Google reviews.
2. Ask for the first-90-days plan before you pay
A real practitioner can sketch the first quarter after 30 minutes with your site: what gets audited, what gets fixed first, what gets built. Anyone who leads with a tool subscription or a backlink quota is executing a template, not your strategy.
Run it on me: send me your domain — the plan sketch is what the first call is for.
3. Demand named, checkable work
Not “increased traffic 300% for a client” — a name, a site you can visit, work you can inspect. Anonymous case studies are unfalsifiable and therefore worthless.
Run it on me: my full project register is public, live-audited, and includes the dead domains.
4. Check credentials that can’t be self-issued
Google certifications expire and are checkable. Government credentials (Skill India/NSDC), institutional teaching roles, and platform verification are hard signals precisely because a third party controls them. Self-described “Top SEO Expert” titles are decoration.
Run it on me: Skill India/NSDC certified trainer (NSQF Level 6), program lead at IIDE — both named institutions you can contact.
5. Get scope, reporting, and exit in writing
One page is enough: what’s included monthly, what a report contains, what notice either side gives. The freelancers who resist this are the ones planning to coast by month four.
Five red flags that predict a wasted retainer
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google. A guarantee means either lying or targeting keywords nobody searches.
- Secret methods. There are no secret methods, only work. Opacity exists to hide either inactivity or link spam.
- No questions about your business. If they can quote before asking what a customer is worth to you, they’re selling a package, not a strategy.
- Cheap + everything. “Complete SEO ₹7,999/month” is an automated report subscription with a human’s name on it.
- Their only client proof is WhatsApp screenshots. Real results live in Search Console and Analytics, and a real freelancer shows them (anonymised is fine).
Freelancer, agency, or neither?
- Budget over ₹1,00,000/month and multi-channel needs → an agency makes sense.
- One clear goal and ₹25,000–₹80,000/month → senior freelancer. That’s the comparison in full.
- Under ₹25,000/month → don’t buy a retainer. Buy a one-off audit and implement it yourself; it converts money into a plan instead of into activity.
And if you want to compare individual freelancers side by side, I maintain a sourced ranking of Mumbai SEO freelancers — with myself placed honestly in it, which currently means #2.
Common questions
How much does it cost to hire an SEO freelancer in Mumbai?
₹8,000–₹25,000/month for junior freelancers, ₹25,000–₹50,000 for mid-level, and ₹50,000–₹1,50,000 for senior specialists. Hourly consulting runs ₹2,000–₹6,000 for experienced practitioners. One-off technical audits run ₹12,000–₹25,000 for typical SME sites.
Is hiring an SEO freelancer better than an agency?
Below roughly ₹80,000/month, usually yes — a senior freelancer’s full attention beats a junior agency team’s partial attention at the same price. Above ₹1,00,000/month with multi-channel needs, an agency’s volume and redundancy start earning their overhead.
How long before SEO shows results?
For a Mumbai SME in a normal niche: local-pack and quick technical wins in 4–8 weeks, meaningful organic movement in 3–6 months, compounding returns after that. Anyone promising page 1 in 30 days is describing either a keyword nobody searches or a method that gets you penalised.
How do I verify an SEO freelancer is legitimate?
Search their name and check they rank for something themselves; ask for named clients you can verify; check third-party credentials (Google certs, government certification, teaching roles); and get scope in writing. If any of the four makes them uncomfortable, that discomfort is your data.
What should an SEO freelancer’s monthly report contain?
Rankings movement for agreed keywords, organic traffic vs the prior period, work completed that month against the plan, and what’s queued next — from Search Console and Analytics, not a proprietary dashboard you can’t audit. A report without a “what we did” section is a weather report, not an accountability document.
