How to assess SEO training: a practical assignment checklist
Use a small website audit to assess search intent, technical diagnosis, prioritisation and reporting. Includes a sample scoring rubric for marketing teams.
A person can remember what a canonical tag does and still recommend the wrong canonical URL. To assess SEO training, ask someone to work through a small, realistic problem and explain their decisions.
The assignment below is a sample for marketing teams, institutes and independent learners. It is not a formal qualification or a report of past student results. Adapt the difficulty to what the programme actually taught.
The assignment: review one service page
Choose a public page the participant has permission to review. Give them a business goal, such as attracting suitable enquiries for a particular service. If Search Console data is available, provide an anonymised export for that page with its date range. Otherwise, make clear that traffic and query conclusions are outside the exercise.
Ask for a short report containing:
- The intended customer and the decision the page helps them make.
- Three findings, each with supporting evidence.
- A proposed fix for each finding, with a reason for its priority.
- A way to validate each fix after it is implemented.
- Questions that need an answer from the business before work begins.
A participant should be able to complete the exercise without publishing changes. Use a staging site for any implementation task.
A sample 20-point assessment
Score each area from zero to four. Use 0 for missing work, 1 for a claim without evidence, 2 for a partly supported answer, 3 for a supported and practical answer, and 4 for an answer that also explains its limitations and validation method.
| Area | What the reviewer should look for |
|---|---|
| Customer and search intent | Identifies a real buyer question and explains whether the page answers it |
| Technical diagnosis | Records the actual URL, status or page element; distinguishes an observation from a suspected cause |
| Content recommendation | Improves a decision, explanation or next step instead of repeating a keyword |
| Prioritisation | Considers business relevance, likely impact, dependencies and effort |
| Measurement | Chooses a suitable check and explains what would count as progress |
Set your own threshold before reviewing submissions. Do not compare raw scores between beginners and experienced SEOs if the tasks or support differ. The most useful comparison is often a participant’s first attempt and their revision after feedback.
What an evidence-backed finding looks like
Weak finding: “The page needs more backlinks and a longer meta description.”
Stronger finding: “The page invites visitors to request an SEO audit, but the contact form only offers training and mentorship. Add an SEO audit option and carry that choice into the form. Check that the correct option is selected when someone follows the service-page link.”
The second finding connects the recommendation to something visible and testable. It does not claim the form change will increase rankings. Its immediate purpose is to make a relevant enquiry easier.
Another useful finding might identify an old URL that returns 404 while the equivalent URL with a trailing slash redirects correctly. The report should record both requests and propose a redirect to the closest relevant current page. “Redirect everything to the homepage” would lose credit because it ignores the visitor’s original destination.
Questions to ask during the review
- What evidence would make you change your recommendation?
- Does this affect finding the page, understanding it or making an enquiry?
- Could the issue be caused by tracking rather than a change in demand?
- Who needs to approve or implement the change?
- What would you check before and after publishing?
Let the participant say “I do not know yet” if they can explain the next check. That is more useful than confident diagnosis from incomplete data.
Keep the teaching aligned with current guidance
Use Google’s SEO Starter Guide as a reference for basic discovery, page organisation and useful content. For structured data or search features, check the relevant current documentation before marking an answer correct.
For example, Google says there are no additional technical requirements for inclusion in AI features. An answer that treats a special schema type as a guarantee of an AI citation should be challenged. Ask the learner to distinguish documented requirements from an idea they would like to test.
Turn the exercise into a learning plan
Keep the feedback specific: “Show the response status for that URL” or “Explain which customer question this section answers.” Ask for a revised report, then choose the next exercise around the weakest area.
For a college module, you can attach this rubric to the assignment brief. For an in-house team, ask a colleague who will maintain the site to review whether the proposed changes are understandable and workable.
